What you should know about lip filler

Lip fillers made from hyaluronic acid (HA) a substance naturally produced in the body can replace lost volume, balance your smile and enhance your smile. HA holds 1000 times its molecular weight in water to boost hydration and create smoother, full lips. Most people have lip fillers to add volume to flat lips or naturally thin lips, lips that have lost definition with age or to add symmetry.

1.  Choose a skilled, qualified injector. In Ontario, only licensed healthcare practitioners such as physicians, dentists, registered nurses, registered practical nurses and nurse practitioners can administer cosmetic injections. Nurse injectors will work with a qualified NP or MD to ensure safe practices. In addition to medical qualifications, you should only be trusting an injector with cosmetic injection training and one that has proven experience and skills. Every person is unique and for best results, you want an injector that will know how to enhance your individual look.

2. Listen to your injector. A skilled injector will assess the overall aesthetic of your face and recommend the type and volume of filler and shape to best enhance your natural result. For example, overfilled lips may not be possible with thin lips or suit the overall aesthetic of your face whereas under filled lips attributed to budget constraints may not give any result at all or last as long.

3. Don’t let social media create unrealistic expectations. Your lips may not support the pout you see online and overfilling could create duck lips when too much lip filler causes the lip to push out and stiffen. Once you overfill lips, you may not be able to psychologically scale back, even if you are not happy with the look, however, you can have peace of mind that HA fillers are completely dissolvable.

4. Lip fillers are minimally invasive but can have temporary discomfort. To minimize discomfort, numbing cream will be applied to the area in advance but you still may feel a pinch when the area is injected. It can take between 10 – 30 minutes to complete the treatment depending on the care taken by the injector. After the treatment you should apply a cold compress to minimize bruising and swelling which can last between 24-72 hours.

5. Lip fillers last from 6 – 12 months. Lip Filler products can determine how long fillers will last and how they break down. For example, quality Teosyal HA fillers are long lasting and break down gradually over time whereas others may dissolve more quickly. The amount of filler injected and your metabolism also can determine how long lip fillers will last.

6. There is a rare but serious risk.  Although rare, vascular occlusion can occur where the blood flow is blocked by the filler. This can occur regardless of the skill of the injector.

With the skill of advanced nurse injector Stephanie at Face Injectables, you can trust that you and your lips will be treated with care and that your results will be amazing!
